The KISS army is arguably one of rock’s most devoted fan bases, thanks to a combination of careful marketing, and an intense live show. The KISS army came out in full force on Friday night to Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, VA. Decked out in face paint, band t-shirts, and even replica costumes of KISS members themselves, the audience was in for a show that was truly a spectacle to behold. Newly inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, KISS set out on a summer tour for the books with support from none other than the legendary Def Leppard.

The amphitheater at Jiffy Lube Live was packed, and a deafening roar arose when the black curtain shielding the stage from view finally dropped at 9:45 PM, to the opening riff of “Psycho Circus.” KISS plays to the audience like no other, just as one would expect from a band that has come to define rock and roll bravado. Posing for photographers and pointing and waving to fans, the band made the show feel almost intimate, which is rarely a word used to describe a show at one of the largest venues in the area.

After years of sticking its logo on all manner of T-shirts, dolls, drinkware and accessories, the rock band Kiss has stamped it on an entire arena football team as well. ¶ And the creation of the Los Angeles Kiss Arena Football League team did not go undocumented. So a reality show about the effort, “4th and Loud,” premieres Aug. 12 on AMC. ¶ It wasn’t crass commercialism that motivated the fire-breathing band, though.

The band’s irrepressible Gene Simmons, he of the tongue and blood-spitting, says he was filling a civic need.

“Los Angeles is the No. 1 media city in America and it doesn’t have football?” he asked rhetorically in a Beverly Hills hotel restaurant where he was doing promotion for the reality show. “You’re kidding me. So opportunity knocks, you answer the door and you give people bang for the buck.”

That bang includes, he says, the blasting brand of hard rock that put the still-active band — appearing at Jiffy Lube Live on Friday — on the map 40 years ago and more. “We have guys who rappel from the ceiling, we have extreme bikers, rock bands, pyrotechnics, girls in cages,” he says.

Brings Blood and Guitar Guts to Yahoo Live BroBy Chris Willman Yahoo Music

They just want to rock & roll all night and party every decade. KISS is now into its fifth decade of licking it up live, albeit the first in which fans can enjoy a wide-screen HD simulcast like the one seen Saturday night on Yahoo Screen Live.

As one KISS Army member on a fan board wrote mid-show, “Imagine if they had this capability in the ’70s.” You’ve come a long way from Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert, baby!

Some of the video highlights you’re about to see date back to the 1970s, in practice. But their entrance is definitely not one of them, since you definitely didn’t see the kind of high-tech production design back in the day that brought the band onto the stage of the PNC Pavilion in Charlotte, NC. Their current rigging is known by fans as “the spider,” although to our eyes it really looks like a combination of a Transformer and one of those multi-legged aliens from Edge of Tomorrow. Here’s one way to plant a KISS:
